The Saints handed Taysom Hill's No. 7 jersey to Hunter Dekkers on Wednesday, giving the backup quarterback the number that had belonged to a far more familiar face in New Orleans. Dekkers, who had worn No. 18 last season, switched after Bryce Lance took that number in this year's draft.
The change mattered because the jersey was not just another piece of equipment. It was a visible sign that the Saints are already moving their identity away from Hill, even before any formal word on 2026. On Wednesday, Dekkers wore No. 7 on the Ochsner Sports Performance Center practice field for the first time since 2016, after re-signing with the Saints following a spring tryout with the UFL.
For Dekkers, the switch was mostly about practicality. No. 18 was no longer open once Lance claimed it, and Nos. 8 and 9 were unavailable because they have been unofficially retired in respect to Archie Manning and Drew Brees. That left No. 7, and the Saints assigned it to the quarterback buried behind Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson on the depth chart. It is a small roster detail, but those are often the ones that tell the biggest truth first.
That truth is not fully settled. Hill's time in New Orleans is likely over, and one report has suggested he could land with Sean Payton's Broncos at some point this season. Hill has also listed his Metairie home for sale and moved his family to Utah, which makes a return harder to picture even if there is still doubt about whether he could come back to the New Orleans Saints in 2026. The Saints have not said that door is closed, but the number change makes it look much narrower than it did a day ago.
Hill's jersey being handed off does not amount to a contract announcement. It does something more subtle and, in a way, more revealing: it shows where the Saints are placing their symbols while the future remains open. For now, No. 7 belongs to Dekkers, and Hill's place in New Orleans looks more like a chapter ending than one waiting for a sequel.
