FC Barcelona has moved to put a new financing vote before its members in September, deciding this morning to include the authorization to expand its credit with Goldman Sachs on the agenda of the club’s ordinary assembly. The meeting will also be used to fold in the extraordinary approval needed for the extra borrowing, a step the club says will make the process easier for compromisarios and cut organizational costs.
The decision matters now because the club is reshaping its calendar to bring several financial matters together at once, instead of waiting for the usual autumn timetable. The ordinary assembly is normally held in October, but the board wants to advance it to September and make it coincide with a match day, while the exact date will be announced in the coming days.
The size of the new request will be substantial. FC Barcelona plans to seek between 400 million and 500 million euros more from Goldman Sachs, on top of the 1,450 already requested, to cover a shortfall in the planned amount and finish the overhaul of Spotify Camp Nou, the surrounding areas and the construction of the Palau. The club says the added debt is extraordinary, not ordinary, and that it can be repaid through the exploitation of the renovated facilities.
There is also a practical reason for compressing the schedule. FC Barcelona is advancing the closing of the 2025-26 accounts and the preparation of the 2026-27 budget so both items can be placed on the same agenda, in a single call and a single assembly. That is the thread running through today’s meeting, which was the first of Joan Laporta’s new board, although he did not attend because he remains hospitalized with an arrhythmia.
Rafael Yuste chaired the session in Laporta’s absence, and the board now has to turn a broad financial plan into a vote members can actually cast next month. The club has already done the hard part by choosing the path; what remains is the date, and whether the membership will endorse a larger bill to finish Espai Barça on the timetable the board wants.
