Fonseca had spent the first five friendlies of the summer using large rotations, but this trip was different. Some of the names in it are there because OL needs bodies for the moment, not because they are locked into the season ahead. Fonseca has narrowed the group because the calendar has tightened, and the choices against Real Betis show that he is treating this like a dress run for Sparta Prague rather than one more chance to scatter minutes around.
Openda’s absence makes that point sharper. He did not make the trip to Gibraltar and is due to play for the first time with his new teammates in Tchéquie, which leaves this match as the last checkpoint before that next step. For Nuamah, the return matters in a different way: after sitting out Wolfsburg, he was back in the group when OL needed a more serious look at its options. The message from the squad is plain enough. This was the last rehearsal, and the next one that counts is already waiting in Tchéquie.
