The Browns and Denzel Ward agreed on July 28, 2026 to a two-year, $62.2 million contract extension that again made him the highest-paid cornerback in history. The deal gives Ward $52.3 million in guarantees and locks in a player who was already under contract through 2027.
For Ward, the agreement is the second time in his career that he has reached the top of the cornerback market. He first did it in 2022, when he signed a five-year, $100 million contract with $71.25 million in guarantees, and this new extension pushes his average salary to $31.1 million.
That number matters because it briefly places Ward above Trent McDuffie, who signed an extension in March 2026. But the lead may not last long. Devon Witherspoon and Christian Gonzalez are expected to land major paydays later in the summer, and either one could move the market again before the year is out.
The structure of the extension has not been broken out year by year, but the math is straightforward: a two-year deal worth $62.2 million works out to $31.1 million annually, and the guarantees cover most of the total. That is the kind of contract that tells you the Browns were willing to pay now rather than risk a bigger number later, especially with Ward’s prior deal still running through 2027.
There is a sharper edge to the timing, though. Ward has regained the crown at a moment when the position is moving fast, and the contract may already be a temporary benchmark rather than a lasting one. For the Browns and Ward, that still leaves one clear fact standing out today: he is once again the cornerback everyone else is being measured against.
