Stx Stock traders brace for a 12% post-earnings swing after Tuesday close

Stx Stock is headed into Tuesday night’s earnings report with traders pricing in a move as large as 12% in either direction by the end of the week. From Monday midday levels, that kind of swing would leave Seagate either back above $900 or down near $720.

That is why the stock is drawing attention now. Seagate has tripled since the start of the year, yet it has also slipped roughly 30% from its highs last month, a reminder that the rally has already given way to a sharper pullback. The setup leaves shareholders and short-term traders trying to price a company that has become one of the market’s faster movers and one of its more volatile ones.

Monday’s note from Morgan Stanley added to the focus. The firm said Seagate and Western Digital are expected to beat Street estimates and raise their outlooks, helped by strong demand for their hardware and higher prices. Seagate’s next report comes after the closing bell Tuesday, while Western Digital is scheduled to report on Aug. 5.

Visible Alpha expects Seagate to post adjusted earnings per share of $5.12 on revenue that rises more than 40% from a year earlier to $3.5 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter. The broker and research estimates also show how much optimism is already built in: of six analysts with current ratings surveyed by Visible Alpha, five rate Seagate a buy and one is neutral, and the average price target is around $992.

That makes the market’s reaction as important as the earnings themselves. The stock’s recent drop is part of a broader pullback in the AI trade, but expectations remain elevated after recent price increases and the stock’s strong run. If Seagate clears those forecasts, the shares could quickly challenge the upper end of their recent range again. If it does not, the retracement traders are already pricing in could deepen fast.

The next confirmed test arrives after Tuesday’s close, when Seagate finally puts numbers behind a stock that has already moved far enough this year to make even a routine earnings miss or beat matter.
