Jalen Carter has not signed a contract extension with the Eagles, even though he became eligible for a second deal in March. The delay leaves one of their best players on a rookie-contract timeline for now, with the team already committed to his fifth-year option and a bigger decision still ahead.
That is why Carter is being watched heading into training camp on July 28. The Eagles selected him No. 9 overall in the 2023 NFL draft, and they have seen enough to treat him like a cornerstone: last season he made the Pro Bowl, played 11 games and finished with three sacks while dealing with a shoulder injury for much of the year.
The numbers also explain why this is not a simple wait-and-see situation. Carter rarely leaves the field and often plays at least 90% of the defensive snaps, which is the kind of workload the Eagles usually reserve for their most important defenders. They have already picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, worth about $27 million for the 2027 season, but that only buys time. It does not settle the long-term price.
If Carter is still unsigned by March 2028, the Eagles would have three choices: trade him, place the franchise tag on him for the 2028 season or let him reach free agency. That is the pressure point behind the silence. The club wants to extend Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, Moro Ojomo is entering the last season of his rookie deal, and Jalyx Hunt will be in the final year of his rookie contract in 2027. A Carter extension would almost certainly shape what the Eagles can do next with that group.
The missing piece is whether the pause reflects Carter’s preference, the Eagles’ timing or both. One side may want to wait for a later market, but every month that passes keeps the cost in play and keeps the 2028 calendar visible. For now, Carter remains exactly what the Eagles drafted him to be: a generational talent they would like to keep, and a contract decision they have not yet finished.
