Chelsea are exploring a move to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion, opening the door to one of the more unexpected striker talks of the summer. Welbeck is 35 and has 12 months left on his Brighton contract, while Brighton are aware of Chelsea’s interest.
The timing matters because Chelsea are weighing up their forward line now, and Welbeck has become a name that fits both urgency and experience. He played in all but one of Brighton’s 38 Premier League games last season and scored 13 goals, form that helps explain why he is being considered as a player who can still change a game at Premier League level. Simon Johnson said the move would be the one most likely to stir Chelsea fans and sharpen questions about what comes next for the club’s other strikers.
There is also the wider pull of his record. Welbeck has 51 goals in 201 matches for Brighton since joining from Watford in 2020, and his career has already taken him from Manchester United, where he scored 29 times in 142 appearances, to Arsenal, where he added 32 goals in 126 games across six seasons. That journey is part of why he is now being viewed differently: not just as a scorer, but as a forward whose experience is part of the appeal.
The fit, though, is not straightforward. Chelsea have recently leaned toward younger signings, yet they are now looking at players judged to be more Premier League ready. They attempted a move for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka earlier in the window and have shown interest in John Stones, a pattern that points to a broader shift. At the same time, Chelsea will listen to offers for Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emgeha, Marc Guiu is expected to depart either on loan or permanently, and Nicolas Jackson has returned after Bayern Munich declined to take up a purchase option. He was also left out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour squad to Australia last week, while Aston Villa have expressed interest in him.
That leaves Welbeck as more than a loose link. Chelsea have not yet made clear whether they will turn that interest into a formal bid, and the price remains undefined. But if they do move, it would not only add another experienced striker to the conversation; it would also force a decision on which of the club’s forwards still has a path at Chelsea.
