Hug watch season is officially upon us, and The Athletic’s MLB staff has put 30 players on its list of possible movers before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Among the names drawing the most attention is Jarren Duran, whose down year has left him struggling to hit above.200 while the Red Sox keep shifting pieces around him.
That is why the MLB trade deadline is being searched now: there has not been a major move yet, but the list of players who could change teams is already long enough to reshape several rosters. Luis Arraez is described as a possible new-uniform candidate, Jasson Domínguez is only 23 years old, and Reid Detmers enters the discussion with two-plus years of team control and ace potential.
Duran’s situation is the one that most neatly explains the pressure. The Red Sox started the season with four outfielders in Jarren Duran, Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu, but Anthony has been out since May with a torn finger ligament, and Duran has been platooning in left against certain lefties, most recently Jahmai Jones. The club could also use Jahmai Jones or Nate Eaton in left, which shows how quickly the depth chart has become a trade-deadline puzzle.
The names on the list are not all there for the same reason. Willy Adames will have to move off shortstop at some point, Gavin Kilen is making progress in the minor leagues, Casey Schmitt still merits an everyday role and Matt Chapman continues to inhabit third base. In the Bronx, Trent Grisham is headed toward free agency after this season, Cody Bellinger just began a five-year contract, Aaron Judge has right field locked down, Giancarlo Stanton has only one more year left on his deal and Ben Rice could grab the designated hitter spot soon.
The friction is clearest around the Angels, who appear open to operating differently under interim GM John Mozeliak even though they do not need to trade Reid Detmers. That sits against the backdrop of a front office that was loath to trade players with multiple years of control under recently fired GM Perry Minasian and owner Arte Moreno, which is why Detmers feels both available in conversation and protected in practice.
For now, the only thing that is certain is the calendar. Thirty players are being tracked, several clubs are weighing fit and control, and the next real answer arrives before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Until then, Duran remains one of the clearest reminders that a slow season can turn a lineup spot into a trade chip almost overnight.
