Petsense by Tractor Supply is slated to close its Kinston store as part of a nationwide reduction of about 75 pet specialty locations, a move the company says is meant to strengthen its business and keep investing in pet care. This week, customers were told the closure will be one of a number of Petsense sites shut over the coming weeks.
The timing matters because Tractor Supply Co. disclosed the broader plan in its second-quarter earnings report this week, putting the Kinston notice inside a much larger reset of the company’s companion animal business. The company said it remains committed to serving pet owners through remaining Petsense by Tractor Supply locations, Tractor Supply stores and online, even as it trims stores that have not performed as well.
For customers of the Kinston Petsense, the immediate question is what happens to the programs tied to the store. The company said Neighbor’s Club memberships, rewards, gift cards and store credits will stay active and can still be used at remaining Petsense by Tractor Supply stores and Tractor Supply locations. Customers with questions about rewards accounts, gift cards, returns or store credits are being directed to Tractor Supply’s Customer Solutions team or the company’s website for nearby locations and online services.
What the company did not say is almost as important as what it did. The letter to local customers did not give a closing date for Kinston, and it did not explain why that store was selected for closure. That leaves customers knowing the store is on the way out, but not yet knowing exactly when the doors will close.
For now, the company is betting that a smaller Petsense footprint can do more than the larger one it is cutting back. Kinston is part of that calculation, and the next step is the one customers care about most: how long the local store will keep operating before the closure reaches the register.
