Santiago Ponzinibbio is back on July 25, and the restart comes with a new opponent, a new event and the kind of timing that changes a fight camp. The 39-year-old will meet Sam Patterson at UFC Abu Dhabi after more than a year away from competition.
That is why Ponzinibbio matters again today. He was meant to face Jack Hermansson on July 25 before Patterson stepped in on four weeks' notice, turning the bout into a fresh test for a veteran trying to keep moving in the UFC picture. Ponzinibbio said Patterson is a young prospect with first-round finishing ability, and the numbers back that up: four fights at 170, four straight finishes, two submissions and two knockouts.
For Ponzinibbio, the return is also personal. He said he looked to the Argentina national soccer team for inspiration while preparing for the fight, pointing to the commitment, grit and heart that carried the side through the 2022 World Cup. He watched Lionel Messi win that title just days after knocking out Alex Morono in Las Vegas, and he said he tries to bring the same approach into his own fights. He called the national team an example of what competition looks like when talent is matched by resolve.
The matchup also comes with a built-in edge. Patterson had put together a four-fight finishing streak before his most recent appearance in March, when he lost a decision to Michael Page. Ponzinibbio said Patterson is dangerous on the mat and in exchanges, but he was blunt about that March fight, saying it did not suit him and that it “sucked.” That makes the style clash harder to read than the record suggests, especially with a replacement opponent stepping in at short notice.
Ponzinibbio’s own path to this point has not been smooth. He was forced out of a fight with Vicente Luque in October of 2025 because he was not 100 percent fit to compete, and this return will be his first in over a year. If he beats Patterson, he does not suddenly jump into title talk, but he does preserve relevance in a crowded division and resets the conversation around whether the veteran still has one more run in him. On July 25, the answer starts with whether he can make a replacement opponent pay for taking the fight on four weeks' notice.
