That is why the opening game matters beyond the first whistle. Mexico’s group-stage schedule is compressed into three matches at Estadio Cuauhtémoc: Costa Rica on Monday, July 27, at 20:00 hrs., and Guatemala on Thursday, July 30, at 19:00 hrs., leaving little room to recover from a slow start. In this format, the Selección Mexicana Sub-20 must turn home advantage into points immediately if it wants to keep control of its path.
The tournament is being staged in Puebla and the Ciudad de México, and it gives qualification opportunities that make every result carry more weight than a standard group match. Diego said the squad has spent a full year preparing, including a major tour in Europa, and described the opening stretch as the point they have been working toward all along. Liceaga, a Chivas academy product, framed it more simply: play at home, feed off the crowd, and chase the championship.
There is still a hard edge to the assignment. If Mexico finishes first or second in its group, or advances as one of the best third-place teams, it stays in Puebla for the quarterfinals. If it keeps moving, the road shifts to the capital for the semifinals and a possible final at Estadio Azteca on August 9. Mexico has the venue, the schedule and the support. What it still has to prove is that those advantages can survive three group-stage matches, starting Friday against Antigua and Barbuda U-20.
