João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos are into the quarter-finals of the Challenge de Shangluo after beating the Australian pair Potts/Pearse 21-19, 21-15 in China. The Portuguese duo had already secured a place in the knockout rounds with two group-stage wins, but still had to clear the last-16 tie to keep moving on.
That is why the result matters now: the next step in their run is already fixed for Saturday, when they face Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher. In a tournament on the world beach volleyball circuit, the margin between getting through and going home is one match, and Pedrosa and Campos made theirs count.
Pedrosa led the way in the win that booked the place in the last eight, with the Portuguese pair keeping control after edging the opening set and then finishing the job more comfortably in the second. The straight-sets victory over Potts/Pearse confirmed their progress in Shangluo and kept Portugal’s interest alive in the event.
There was still a small twist in the path forward. Pedrosa and Campos had already done enough in the group stage to guarantee qualification for the elimination phase, but that did not spare them the pressure of the knockout round. They still had to deliver against Potts/Pearse to turn a place in the next stage into a place in the quarter-finals.
For now, the result leaves them with momentum and a defined target. Saturday’s meeting with Nicolaidis and Carracher will decide whether the Portuguese duo can turn a solid run in Shangluo into something deeper.
