Jessica Pegula is facing a wave of criticism after remarks she made about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding on The Players Podcast drew backlash online. The comments, made on July 3 at Madison Square Garden, quickly turned a casual celebrity discussion into a bigger conversation about tone, class and what fans saw as a dig at Swift.
The reaction matters because Pegula was not speaking in the abstract. She was talking about two of the most watched names in pop culture and sports, while the public was already tracking the wedding and the rumors around it. That last line is where the pushback hardened. Pegula later defended the conversation when asked about keeping up with the updates after her match against Iva Jovic at Wimbledon, saying Desirae was “the big Taylor Swift fan” and that the others mostly just listened to Swift’s music. She also said it had become “a little bit of a topic because nobody knew what was happening with it,” and noted, “We’ve been keeping up on it a little bit.”
When asked about the secrecy around the wedding, Pegula said it was “crazy,” but added that it was still Swift, so she did not expect anything less than something different. She also said she had heard the sign was out on MSG and that Adam Sandler officiated the wedding. The sequence leaves the same unresolved point at the center of the backlash: whether the podcast crew was simply joking about a headline-grabbing wedding, or whether the joke crossed into the kind of language that fans were never going to let slide.
