The New Orleans Pelicans still have not made a trade or a free agent signing this summer, and that silence has become the story. They remain the only team in the league without a move, even as the front office led by Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver keeps the roster intact.
That is why Trey Murphy Trade Rumors keep drawing attention now. The Pelicans won 26 games last season, then spent the summer in a holding pattern while reporting pointed to a possible asking price of three first-round picks for the 26-year-old forward. Murphy fits seamlessly everywhere and is on a team-friendly contract, which is part of the reason interest has followed him all summer.
The number matters, but only if the picks have real value. Three first-rounders from one team can look very different from three from another, and that is why the mention of the Pistons matters in the discussion. A package built over the next five seasons would not mean the same thing as three picks coming from a team stuck near the top of the standings.
Even so, the Pelicans have taken heat for doing nothing while other teams have moved around them, and that criticism is not baseless. But a quiet summer does not automatically make every non-move wrong. Moving Murphy for the right return could still have been a reasonable decision, especially if the front office believed the market had already gone as far as it could go.
What remains unresolved is the part that would settle the debate: whether the Pelicans ever had an offer that came close to the reported price. As of now, that is not known. The Pelicans may still choose to act later, but for now the bigger fact is simpler — they have stayed put, and Murphy’s name is still hanging over an offseason that has not really started.
