Manchester United are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over Tynan Thompson, with discussions now under way over a fee for the 18-year-old left-winger. If the move goes through, it would be a formal transfer because Thompson signed professional terms with Spurs in May 25.
That is why his name is drawing attention now. United have been looking at new left-wingers this summer, and Thompson has emerged as one of the players in their orbit as they continue to add young talent from Premier League rivals.
Sam Tabuteau said United were speaking to Tottenham about the deal and that club-to-club talks are taking place over the price. He added that the teenager’s status makes the process different from a youth move: once a player has signed pro terms, a switch is treated as a formal transfer rather than a simple academy agreement.
Thompson is 18, stands 6’2″ and plays on the left, but those numbers only tell part of why he has attracted interest. The Athletic described him as having incredibly quick feet and said he is as comfortable on his stronger right foot as he is on his left, a profile that fits the kind of wide forward United have been trying to add.
There is, though, a complication in the background. United are pushing for Thompson while also being strongly linked with other new left-wingers this summer, including Crysencio Summerville, who is viewed as their leading target for that position. That leaves the club weighing whether Thompson is a priority signing or part of a broader search for the same role.
The chase also fits a pattern. United signed Ayden Heaven from Arsenal in January 2025 for £1.5 million, and his value on Transfermarkt is now listed at £25 million. They also spent £52 million to bring in Leny Yoro, a reminder that their recent work has leaned toward younger players with room to grow rather than older short-term fixes.
The next step is simple, even if the answer is not: Tottenham must decide whether to sell, and United must decide what fee they are prepared to pay. Until then, Thompson remains a teenager at the center of a transfer that says as much about United’s recruiting strategy as it does about the player himself.
