Anna Melisano is getting her first UFC walk on Saturday night, and it comes with a fast turn and a hard assignment. The 29-year-old makes her Octagon debut against Dione Barbosa at UFC Fight Night: Du Plessis vs. Usman in Oklahoma City, stepping in at 125 pounds for a bout that now gives her a direct test against a more established UFC fighter.
That is why Melisano is being searched now. She arrives with a 6–1 record, a 0–0 UFC mark and a six-fight winning streak, but this is not a soft landing. Barbosa, 34, owns a 9–4 record, has a 3–2 UFC mark and has won two of her last three bouts, including a majority-decision win over Melissa Gatto in April. She is also a heavy favorite on Saturday’s card, with the total set at over/under 2.5 rounds.
Melisano’s recent run gives the debut some real weight. In December, she stopped Andrea Amaro by TKO through doctor’s stoppage to win the Fury FC strawweight title, and she did it while carrying a three-fight stoppage streak. She was also the No. 1 pick on Michael Bisping’s team on The Ultimate Fighter 34, which made her loss to Melissa Amaya on the premiere in mid-June stand out even more. That defeat, like her lone professional loss, came by submission.
That is the part that makes this matchup more than a debut story. Barbosa is known for clinch work and ground game, and she holds black belts in judo and jiu-jitsu. Melisano has been finishing fights and building momentum, but her one clear vulnerability has come against opponents who can get the fight to the mat and keep her there. In a women’s flyweight matchup built around a prospect versus a veteran, that is the detail that hangs over the bout.
She is stepping in on short notice for Veronica Hardy, which adds another layer of pressure to a first UFC appearance that was already steep. The fight now sits as one of the clearest measuring sticks on the card: a six-fight winner trying to turn a strong run into a debut that matters, against a veteran who has spent more time solving UFC-level problems. By the time the cage door closes, the question will not be whether Melisano belongs in the UFC. It will be whether her pace and finishing power can survive Barbosa’s grip on the fight.
