James Harden is publicly pushing for LeBron James to end his free agency with a return to Cleveland, and he is calling it a “storybook finish.” Harden said James is likely to make the call on his own, adding that he does not think anybody’s pitch will move him.
The timing matters because James, 41, is now an unrestricted free agent after ending his eight-year run with the Los Angeles Lakers and is preparing for a record-breaking 24th NBA season. With Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia and Golden State all linked to his signature, every comment about where he might land is part basketball, part leverage, part farewell tour.
Harden made his remarks at Fanatics Fest, where he framed a Cleveland return as the cleanest ending to a career that began there. James was the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, spent his early years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, left for the Miami Heat in 2010, came back four years later and delivered Cleveland its first NBA championship in 2016 before leaving again for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. He later won his fourth title in 2020, and now the question is whether the next stop is a final season somewhere or another chapter in the same long loop.
There is a catch in Harden’s pitch. He is urging James toward Cleveland while also saying the choice probably will not be swayed by recruiting. That fits the way this free-agency chase has been described for weeks: Cleveland has a roster built around Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and Harden, but the decision belongs to James alone, and he has the freedom to take it anywhere.
Harden’s own future adds another layer to the story. He declined his player option for the 2026-27 season and is reportedly working toward a new multi-year agreement with Cleveland, the same team he was acquired by in February in exchange for Darius Garland and a draft pick. For Cleveland, the appeal is obvious. For James, the next move is still his to make, and if he chooses a third stint in Cleveland, it would be the kind of ending that changes how the whole career is remembered.
