Son Heung-Min has already become a central figure for LAFC, with 25 goal contributions in 26 MLS appearances, including playoffs, since joining on August 6, 2025, and he led all players with seven assists at the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. Yet he has not yet tasted El Trafico, even as his profile and production have made him one of the most watched players in the league. That leaves Friday as more than a return from break; it is the first chance for a global name to step into a rivalry that has been on the radar of stars for nearly a decade.
LAFC’s buildup was not limited to the players who went to the World Cup. Hugo Lloris has been strong in MLS this year with eight clean sheets, and during the latter half of the tournament he trained at LAFC’s Liquid I.V. Performance Center along with Davíd Martínez, Nkosi Tafari, Ryan Porteous and others. Martínez has nine goals in 2026 across all competitions, and he and Porteous earned Best XI honors last month, a reminder that LAFC comes out of the break with depth as well as headline names.
Friday’s match will not settle the rivalry, but it does reset it. LAFC comes out of an international interruption with more World Cup mileage than any of its MLS peers, fresh legs on key players and a chance to put Son in his first El Trafico.
