WWE moved on Friday night to cover for a champion it still expects back soon, announcing that an interim WWE Women's Champion will be crowned because Rhea Ripley cannot compete at SummerSlam. The title will be decided in a Ladder Match, turning the division's next two weeks into a race to replace her for now.
The timing matters because the company is not waiting for the injury picture to clear on its own. Adam Pearce said Ripley has been working tirelessly with the medical team to come back from a torn meniscus, but he also said she will not be ready for the biggest stage of the summer. Five women will fill the bracket through qualifying matches on WWE SmackDown, starting on July 17, with the interim champion set to be crowned on Saturday, August 1 or Sunday, August 2.
Ripley has been sidelined in recent weeks because of a knee injury, and the temporary title move is WWE's way of keeping SummerSlam on schedule without pretending the championship picture is normal. That is the part fans will notice first: the company is not vacating the belt or rewriting the division around her absence. It is building a stand-in champion while leaving the door open for Ripley to return and reclaim the real one.
Pearce made that point plainly when he said Ripley would eventually come back and fans would see who the one and only WWE Women's Champion truly is. That creates the friction at the center of the story. Ripley won the title at WrestleMania 42 by defeating Jade Cargill, then defended it against Cargill again at Clash in Italy, so the interim belt is not the same thing as the one she carried into this injury break.
WWE has not said which women will enter the qualifying matches, which leaves the first round of this reset still partly hidden. That uncertainty is part of the draw, but it also shows how quickly the company had to move once Ripley's SummerSlam status became impossible. For now, the path is clear even if the field is not: five women will fight their way in on WWE SmackDown, and one of them will leave August's first weekend with a title that only lasts until Ripley is back.
