Stephen Curry made a fresh public push for LeBron James to join the Golden State Warriors in free agency on Wednesday, saying the move would let James finish his NBA career “the right way.”
Curry laid out the sales pitch on Good Morning America with the kind of confidence that comes only from someone who has won with the same core for years. He said the appeal was simple: “The Bay, we know how to win, it’s beautiful weather, great golf, and I know he’s into that,” then added that James would enjoy “what it means to finish your career the right way.”
The pitch lands now because James is already tied to a crowded market. ’s Shams Charania has reported that the Warriors are one of five teams still in the running after James moved on from the Los Angeles Lakers, with the Minnesota Timberwolves also involved and a focus on the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. That keeps Curry’s comments from sounding like offseason theater; they are part of a live recruiting race around one of the NBA’s biggest stars.
Draymond Green has also been working the angle. On The Draymond Green Show, he said he spoke to James during a recent golf trip to Puerto Rico and did his own pitch, joking that he was “pretty decent at it.” Green said he did not know whether it changed anything, but added that he hoped it did and that there was not yet a decision made. Those remarks suggest the Warriors are not just flirting with the idea from afar. They are leaning into it from inside the locker room.
Still, the path is not clean. Earlier this month, Charania said the Warriors did not view themselves as frontrunners unless they acquired Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards, but Will Dawkins has since said Davis is expected to stay in D.C. next season. That leaves the Warriors with less leverage than they would like, even with Curry and Green making the case. For now, the idea is alive because James has not closed the door and the Warriors keep talking as if their pitch can still land. The question is no longer whether they want him; it is whether that kind of recruiting can overcome the rest of the field.
