Washington Spirit vs Gotham at Citi Field is on track to set a new attendance record for a women’s professional sporting event in New York City, with more than 40,000 tickets sold for Wednesday night’s match. The 2025 NWSL Championship rematch was also drawing attention because Gotham FC is playing its first home match in Queens.
For Gotham, the setting matters almost as much as the crowd. The club has already announced a planned 2028 move to Etihad Park, which is under construction next to Citi Field, while it currently plays in Harrison, New Jersey. The game is set to air on, turning a single regular-season night into a showcase for how quickly interest in the club and the league has grown in New York.
That surge is arriving in rough conditions. Temperatures in New York City were expected to near 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday, and the region had alerts for poor air quality as smoke from Canadian wildfires spread across the northeast of the U.S. The area was under an extreme heat warning until around kickoff at 8 p.m. ET, even as Zohran Mamdani warned around 1:30 p.m. local time that air quality had reached unhealthy levels in parts of the city and told people to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
The league said it had been monitoring weather conditions closely and had taken Wet Bulb Globe Temperature readings on Tuesday under conditions similar to those expected Wednesday. The field was fully shaded by the projected warm-up time, and the readings ranged from 76.0 to 79.0 degrees Fahrenheit, well below the threshold for delaying matches. The NWSL said it would follow normal game day procedures for heat, and was set to take another air-quality reading about an hour before pre-game warm-ups.
That leaves the biggest question hanging over the night: whether the crowd inside Citi Field will be as historic as the ticket sales already suggest. The league’s heat and air-quality rules can still shape what happens before kickoff, but unless conditions worsen sharply, the match is expected to go ahead with the record chase intact.
