The conversation matters now because Green is 36 and is reportedly expected to sign a multi-year deal to stay with the Golden State Warriors after declining a $27.7 million player option for 2026-27, a move that could give the club the financial flexibility to pursue a star of James’ size. That is why the Warriors LeBron James recruitment chatter has taken off: the contract structure around Green has become part of the larger basketball math.
Green did not spell out every word of the pitch, but he made clear it was not a passing joke. He said they were not going to spend a golf trip hanging out for a recruitment session, yet he also said the exchange would make the brain work a little bit. The point was simple enough. If James was in front of him for days, Green was going to talk about what a future together could look like.
That is where the story runs into the hard part. Steph Curry has said playing alongside James would be “such a unique story in NBA history,” but he also said it is “a little premature right now to talk about it.” Rich Paul went further last week, saying a decision on James was not imminent. Paul also shared a white board image listing the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets among the teams under consideration.
The wider picture is still unsettled, and the Warriors have also been linked with a possible double swoop for James and Anthony Davis, even as the Washington Wizards have reportedly pushed back on the idea that Davis is on the trading block. Davis has one year left on his current terms and a player option for 2027-28, which only adds another layer of uncertainty around the list of moving parts. For now, Green has done the recruiting, Curry has pumped the brakes, and Paul has made clear that James is not close to a decision.
That leaves the most important question untouched: whether Green’s pitch was the opening move in something real, or just the kind of conversation elite players can have when they are on the course and away from everyone else. For now, it is the latter that has the edge, because James has not signaled that a choice is coming soon.
