Chelsea have opened contact over a move for Maxence Lacroix, turning a long-running interest into a live summer transfer conversation. The Crystal Palace defender is now the club’s primary centre-back target, with a reported fee of about £47 million to £47.5 million under discussion and Trevoh Chalobah possibly folded into the deal.
The timing matters because this is not a vague winter plan or a speculative link from months ago. Chelsea’s interest in Lacroix has been traced to late June and early July, and the club is still working on defensive additions ahead of the 2026-27 season. That makes this one of the clearest signs yet that their rebuild from the back is moving from idea to negotiation.
Lacroix, 26, joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in August 2024 and quickly became part of the defensive core. He also contributed to Palace’s FA Cup triumph, which is one reason any sale is not straightforward. A player who has already settled in and helped deliver a trophy is not the kind of defender a club gives up easily, especially if the bid does not fully match the value Palace place on him.
That is where the structure of the move becomes as important as the fee itself. Reports indicate Chelsea may try to use Chalobah as part of a player-plus-cash arrangement, which is a way to lower the cash outlay while still offering Palace a player with Premier League experience. In simple terms, that only works if both sides agree on how much Chalobah counts inside the package and whether Palace want him enough to reduce the cash demand on Lacroix.
There is also a second layer to Chelsea’s summer thinking. Lacroix is the priority, but Como’s Jacobo Ramon is being considered as a complementary option, and the 21-year-old is viewed as a younger and cheaper developmental piece than the Palace defender. Ramon made 37 appearances for Como in Serie A last season under Cesc Fabregas, which gives Chelsea a different type of profile to compare against the more established Lacroix.
For now, the key question is not whether Chelsea want Lacroix. They do. It is whether Crystal Palace will accept a sale at the price being discussed, and whether a package built around Chalobah gives them enough reason to move. Until Palace decide that point, Chelsea’s contact is only the first step in a deal that could still be shaped, delayed or rejected.
