That history made the straight-sets loss more striking, especially with Fritz saying he wanted to feel 100 percent and give Zverev a match, then adding that he felt fine in warm-up before having no answer for what changed three games in.
Zverev’s win was built on serve and steadiness. He landed his first serve more than 80 percent of the time and won three-quarters of the points on his second serve, numbers that left Fritz little room to work back into the match. Fritz had been playing through knee tendinitis for much of the season, and the treatment break during the second set only deepened the sense that he could not fully fight through the match. He entered Wimbledon as the last American man standing, but the body language and the scoreline both showed how quickly the day turned against him once the knee tightened.
Zverev now moves on with a first Wimbledon semifinal behind him, while Fritz leaves with the harder question: whether the knee stopped him, or whether Zverev simply found a level Fritz could not answer on the day. Arthur Féry’s upset of Flavio Cobolli on Centre Court and Linda Nosková’s quarterfinal against Elise Mertens were part of the same Wednesday schedule, but the weight of the afternoon belonged to the match that ended Fritz’s run and changed Zverev’s place in the tournament.
