Conor McGregor’s five-year return to the octagon ended on Saturday night in UFC 329 after a knee injury stopped his fight with Max Holloway in the opening round. The bout was waved off after McGregor grabbed his knee and could not continue.
The timing matters because this was McGregor’s first fight since July 10, 2021, and the comeback was supposed to answer a simple question: whether the 37-year-old could still handle a top-level fight after so long away. Instead, the return turned into an injury update almost as soon as it began.
Joe Rogan said McGregor tried a jumping roundhouse kick at the start of the round and landed with his knee in the worst possible position. When Holloway evaded the strike, McGregor immediately reached for the knee, and referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight after another kick failed to land properly. Rogan suggested McGregor had blown out his ACL with the first move he made.
Dana White said doctors believed McGregor tore his ACL, but scans on the knee are still needed to confirm that diagnosis. That leaves the fight with a hard result but an unfinished medical picture, which is where the story now sits.
McGregor told fans afterward that he had no injury going into the fight and said he had been throwing kicks, planted and jumping, throughout camp and backstage before stepping in. He said the problem came out of nowhere and described the aftermath as dark and hellish, a sharp contrast to the pre-fight confidence that he was fully healthy.
Daniel Cormier said McGregor’s long absence from the sport could have played a role in the injury, a reminder that a five-year return is not the same as a routine comeback. For now, the next answer that matters is not about his opponent or the score; it is whether those scans confirm the ACL tear White and Rogan described, and how long that would push back McGregor’s plans from here.
