Magda Linette will open her Athens campaign against Mai Hontama, landing in the first round of a WTA 250 event that has brought the women’s tour back to the Greek capital for the first time in 36 years. The tournament begins on Monday, 13 July, and Linette enters as the eighth seed in the singles draw.
That seeding matters because it shapes the route in front of her from the start. If Linette beats Hontama, her next opponent will be Valentini Grammatikopoulou or Alycia Parks, with a possible quarterfinal line that could include Maria Sakkari, Polina Kudermetova, Harriet Dart or a qualifier. Clara Tauson is the top seed in the field, while Ann Li is seeded second and Tereza Valentova sits seventh in the lower half of the draw.
The return to Athens gives the event a clean historical marker. The last WTA tournament in the city was the 1990 Athens Trophy, which makes this week’s field the first women’s tour stop in the Greek capital in more than three decades. The tournament runs on hard court through Sunday, 19 July, and the singles champion will receive 250 ranking points and 32,5 thousand euro.
Linette is not the only Polish player in the draw. Katarzyna Piter is also competing, and she is in the doubles event with Eudice Chong as the third seeds. Their first-round match is set against Maria Timofiejewa and Jekaterina Jaszyna, giving Poland a second path through the week while Linette tries to handle the singles side on her own.
There is a small mismatch in the shape of the draw that makes the opener harder to file away as routine. Linette is seeded eighth, but she is not being eased through a Polish-led section; the top seed is Tauson, and the early rounds have already produced a direct test against Hontama. That leaves Linette with a straightforward job and a narrow margin: win the first match, and the tournament immediately gets deeper.
