Charlotte FC has signed Allan Saint-Maximin as its newest designated player, locked him into a three-year contract and handed him the No. 10 shirt. The move gives the club a high-profile winger just as its season is set to restart, but not an immediate debut.
The timing matters because Charlotte FC resumes on July 22 against Atlanta United, and Saint-Maximin was still waiting on his visa late last week. He is not expected to play in that match, which means fans will see the signing long before they see him on the field.
Saint-Maximin arrived with the résumé Charlotte wanted. In 12 matches for RC Lens, he produced six goal contributions, scoring three goals and adding three assists, and helped push the club to second in Ligue 1 and a place in the Champions League. He also said he showed even more leadership this year with Lens, a claim that fits the way Charlotte is presenting him now.
He made clear he is not coming in as a cautious addition. Speaking with select local media late last week, Saint-Maximin said the club offered him a chance to become a legend and that he knows he is capable of doing it. He also drew a line between himself and Wilfried Zaha, saying they are different players and that his own game can help in several ways because he is a real leader.
That matters for Charlotte because the signing is about more than speed and dribbling. The club is buying a player who believes he can shape a group, not just beat defenders. Saint-Maximin also said he had not yet visited Charlotte and sent his sister Cassandra to scout the city for him, a small detail that makes the move feel unfinished even as the paperwork is done.
The open question is how long the wait will last. Charlotte has its new No. 10 on the books, but the visa remains the gatekeeper to his first appearance. Once that clears, the club will finally get the player it spent the summer window chasing; until then, the signing is real, and the debut is still on hold.
