Hanwha Life Esports eliminated LYON in the MSI Lower Final after a five-game battle that swung back and forth until the end. LYON were competitive in every game, and the deciding fifth game was close enough that one or two different plays could have sent them to the MSI Grand Final instead.
That is why MSI Finals is drawing attention now: the lower bracket produced a series with real consequences, and it ended with Hanwha Life Esports moving on while LYON were left to wonder how close they came. The matchup carried extra weight because LYON had already knocked out G2 Esports, who had earlier beaten T1, turning this into one of the most surprising runs of the event.
Gumayusi was right in the middle of the action. Kanavi secured a first blood kill for him after Delight engaged on Isles, but Berserker and Isles later won a 2v2 in the bot lane and Berserker answered with first blood on Gumayusi in another game. That back-and-forth summed up the series better than any scoreboard could: HLE kept finding the sharpest moment, but LYON kept forcing the fight back onto even ground.
The momentum kept changing from lane to lane. HLE earned two kills in the top lane at 6 minutes in one game, while LYON stole the second Drake to stop HLE from stacking dragons. In another game, LYON won a Rift Herald fight three for three after Saint and Inspired held it together, then broke open the bot lane with a dive on Zeus and used the Rift Herald to destroy both bot towers. LYON also built a 1k gold lead after turning a fight when HLE thought Inspired had been killed, and later took the Drake while chasing every HLE member to finish one game.
HLE still had their answers. Zeus solo killed Dhokla in one game, and Inspired joined his bot lane in another dive to kill both HLE bot laners. HLE also had early leads in all three lanes in one game thanks to the laning phase, then lost the Hextech Soul after LYON caught Saint in the mid lane. In another fight, LYON won with only the solo laners left alive on HLE and stalled long enough to use the Elder buff. But when the last push came in Game 5, Delight landed the hooks that stopped LYON cold, and Kanavi caught Inspired in the top lane before HLE won the fight to end the first game and, eventually, the series.
LYON’s run ended one step short of the MSI Grand Final, and that is the hard edge of this result. They were close enough to make the final game feel like a missed chance, but Hanwha Life Esports did what they had to do when the series reached its sharpest point: they closed it out and moved on.
