Ryan Garcia’s proposed WBC welterweight title defense against Conor Benn was not announced on Friday, even though the fighters and the Zuffa Boxing PR team were on hand expecting it to land during the weigh-in. The delay came down to unfinished paperwork on Garcia’s side, leaving the fight in place as a plan but not yet a public event.
That matters now because the bout has been framed as a September 12 event in Las Vegas, with Garcia defending his WBC welterweight title against Benn. The announcement was supposed to be the signal that the promotion was ready to move from private talks to a public launch, and Friday was the day people were waiting for it to happen.
Dan Rafael said there were still issues on the Golden Boy, Garcia and DAZN side, while Benn’s side was already done. In his telling, the holdup was simple: the paper was not done, and no announcement would be made until it was done. That is why the expected reveal slipped even though the fighters were present and the promotion had assembled around it.
Garcia’s side has been the harder part of the negotiation because of his ties to Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN, while Benn is now aligned with Zuffa Boxing. The split in the moving pieces helps explain why a fight that has been building for some time still could not be formally unveiled when everyone was in the same place and the event around them was already underway.
Garcia and Benn both made brief appearances during the UFC 329 festivities, then spent much of the event on the sidelines as the announcement failed to materialize. If the remaining issues are resolved, the next step is a kickoff press conference in New York next week around Zuffa Boxing’s July 26 card at Madison Square Garden. Until then, the fight exists in the most important place in boxing: close enough to talk about, not finished enough to announce.
