Fulham hired Alvaro Arbeloa after his five-month spell in charge of Real Madrid raised his managerial stock, even though he left with no trophies. The 43-year-old moved on after steering the Real Madrid Squad through 28 games that produced 18 wins, two draws and eight defeats.
That is why his name is drawing attention now. Arbeloa was not a long-established senior coach before this run; he was an emergency appointment by Florentino Perez in early January, stepping up from Real Madrid's third-tier reserve team after Xabi Alonso was sacked midway through his debut campaign. Fulham have now turned to a coach whose brief time in the top job was enough to change how he is viewed.
The numbers explain why his reputation improved. Real Madrid scored 58 goals and conceded 34 under Arbeloa, beat Benfica and Manchester City in Champions League knockout-phase games, and won 3-2 against Atletico Madrid in La Liga. But the same spell also began badly, with a 3-2 defeat away to Albacete in the Copa del Rey on his debut, and Albacete had never beaten Real Madrid in 10 meetings before that night.
He also inherited a side that had not fully taken to Xabi Alonso's methods, and Arbeloa answered by simplifying the playing style and giving players more freedom to make their own decisions during matches. That helped Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde, who improved after feeling under-appreciated by Alonso, while Thiago Pitarch was promoted to the senior team at 18 years old. Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler kept Real Madrid alive in the Champions League tie with Bayern Munich until late in the second leg in Germany, but Vincent Kompany still came out on top tactically as Bayern won 6-4 on aggregate in mid-April.
The friction in Arbeloa's record is impossible to miss. Real Madrid won zero trophies, lost to Bayern, then watched Barcelona win 2-0 in El Clasico in May and confirm themselves as back-to-back La Liga champions. Later in the season, Madrid also lost at home to Getafe and away to Mallorca, even as Arbeloa's standing kept rising. He was not protected by a perfect run; he was rewarded for making a difficult job look manageable, and Fulham have now bought into that version of him.
