Julian Edelman has put a new label on Erling Haaland: “European Gronk.” On Yahoo Sports Daily, Edelman said the Norway forward reminded him of Rob Gronkowski, calling Haaland “full, European Gronk” and later “European Gen Z Gronk.”
The comparison lands because Haaland is no longer being discussed only for goals. He has been getting attention in the United States for off-pitch moments, from grabbing a New York deli sandwich to wearing a custom cowboy hat, and for posting on Snapchat after games and answering fans. Edelman said he loved seeing that side of the forward and called it “really fun watching these guys come in and enjoy the United States.”
That is a bigger stage than a joke nickname. Haaland, who joined Manchester City in July 2022, has since won two Premier League titles and one Champions League title, but his reach is widening beyond club trophies and goal totals. The height talk around him also fits the image: at his size, he already looks like an athlete built to draw attention in more than one sport, even if the comparison here is really about personality rather than a direct NFL match-up.
That is where Edelman’s point runs into the hard edge of the comparison. Gronkowski spent an 11-year NFL career winning four Super Bowls and turned himself into one of football’s most recognizable personalities. Haaland has not built that kind of U.S. celebrity file, yet, but his off-field profile is starting to grow fast enough that an NFL voice felt comfortable putting him in the same conversation.
The timing matters because Haaland and Norway are still in the middle of a run that has pushed him onto a wider American stage. He scored seven goals through five games, including a brace in Norway’s win over Brazil that sent the team into its first-ever quarterfinals. Norway was scheduled to play England on Saturday at Miami Stadium, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. ET, giving Haaland another chance to keep the attention on him — on the pitch and well beyond it.
