Julian Edelman just gave Erling Haaland a label that will travel fast: “European Gronk.” The former NFL receiver said the Manchester City striker reminded him of Rob Gronkowski, then doubled down by calling him “European Gen Z Gronk” while praising the way Haaland has carried himself off the field in the United States.
That comparison landed because Haaland is not only scoring, but also turning into a personality. Edelman said he liked seeing him on Snapchat after games, answering fans, doing goofy things and even putting cowboy boots on. It is the kind of off-pitch behavior that makes a star feel bigger than his sport, and it helps explain why Haaland Weight is becoming a search term around him right now.
Haaland has backed up the attention with production. Since joining Manchester City in July 2022, he has won two Premier League titles and a Champions League title, and for Norway he has scored seven goals through five games. He also scored a brace in Norway’s win over Brazil, a result that helped send Norway into its first-ever quarterfinals.
The comparison to Gronkowski carries a clear edge, though. Edelman knows what that kind of larger-than-life presence looks like from close range, as a three-time Super Bowl champion and former teammate of Gronkowski. Haaland is drawing the same kind of off-field curiosity, but he is still building the résumé that would let the nickname stick beyond the joke.
That is why Saturday matters. Norway will face England in a quarterfinal at Miami Stadium, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One. If Haaland keeps scoring and keeps playing to the crowd, the Gronk comparison may start to sound less like a bit and more like a brand.
