Clement Turpin will take charge of England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami, a high-pressure appointment that gives the French official his fourth match at the tournament and his second involving England. FIFA has put one of its most seasoned referees in the middle of a knockout game that will be watched as closely for discipline as for the result.
The assignment matters now because Turpin is no stranger to this stage. He has been listed by FIFA as an international referee since 2010, handled the Champions League final in 2022 and took the Europa League final a year earlier. England have already seen him once in this World Cup, when he awarded a penalty against Croatia in their first group-stage match, then ordered a retake after Josko Gvardiol encroached and Dominik Livakovic stood in front of his goal line. Harry Kane missed the first effort before the kick was retaken.
That earlier decision is part of why this quarter-final will be read so closely. Turpin has built a reputation, in Graham Scott’s words, for a calm demeanour whatever a game throws at him, with a clear instinct to defuse conflict, manage the tempo and keep the temperature of the match under control. Scott also noted that the 10 yellow cards Turpin showed in Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Manchester City in 2023 was out of character for him, which is one reason this appointment will draw extra attention.
Turpin’s history with Tuchel adds another layer. He sent Tuchel to the stands during Bayern Munich’s loss to Manchester City in 2023, and Tuchel later gave the performance a Grade E. Scott said he had already seen the referee at close range during Tuchel’s first two Chelsea matches in January 2021 behind closed doors at Stamford Bridge, when Tuchel was hard work but still affable and polite, and, even under pressure, usually responded to reason. If Turpin keeps the same control he is known for, England vs Norway should be decided by the players rather than the officials. If he does not, the noise around the quarter-final will only grow louder.
