Manchester City have completed the signing of Jeremy Monga from Leicester City, landing the 17-year-old on a five-year contract worth £10m plus add-ons. The deal runs until the summer of 2031 and brings one of English football’s most closely watched teenagers to Manchester City after a race for his signature that ended in City’s favour.
The move matters now because Monga is not arriving as a raw prospect with only academy promise behind him. He has already made 37 senior appearances for Leicester, including seven in the Premier League, and turned 17 on Friday before the transfer was finalised. In April 2025, he made his top-flight debut against Newcastle United aged 15 years and 271 days, a figure that underlines why Manchester City moved early and paid a fee Leicester were prepared to demand.
His 2025/26 season gave more evidence of how quickly he has developed. Monga played 30 times in all competitions for Leicester, scoring one goal and providing two assists, and he is already an England U19 international. That record helps explain why Manchester City were willing to match the valuation, even though Arsenal had also held talks and Monga was reportedly keen on a move there.
The gap in the story is what Arsenal would not cross. Manchester City were willing to meet Leicester’s price, while Arsenal were not, and that decision settled a transfer battle over a player still only at the start of his career. Hugo Viana, City’s director of football, said Monga had already made huge strides and that the club had seen his ability first-hand at Leicester, adding that at 17 he is only likely to improve and that this is the right next step for him.
Monga said he knew instantly it was the right choice once he learned Manchester City were interested, calling the move a dream come true and pointing to the path taken by Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly. For Manchester City, the signing fits a familiar line of recruitment: move early, pay for proven talent, and trust the pathway.
