The Kansas City Royals used the No. 30 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft on July 11 to select Ole Miss pitcher Taylor Rabe, putting a first-round tag on a hard-throwing right-hander whose rise came after an injury setback.
Rabe, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound pitcher, became the second Ole Miss player taken in the draft after Cade Townsend went No. 23 overall to the Cubs. For the Royals, the pick signals that they valued Rabe's size, velocity and fast-moving development enough to spend a premium first-round choice on him.
That climb mattered because Rabe did not arrive at this point in a straight line. Before the 2024 season, he suffered a UCL injury and redshirted, pushing his breakout later than most top draft picks. By 2026, though, he had turned himself into one of the Rebels' most important arms, appearing in 17 games and making 11 starts while posting a 5-3 record and a team-best 3.55 ERA.
His fastball sat in the high-90s, and he used that power to miss bats in volume. Rabe piled up 105 strikeouts against 15 walks in 76 innings, and by the time Ole Miss reached the College World Series, he had worked his way into the No. 1 starter role in the rotation. He started against North Carolina, covered 5⅔ innings, and allowed one earned run on two hits in Ole Miss's 6-2 loss.
The only thing the draft pick does not yet answer is the one that shapes the next phase of Rabe's career: whether he signs with Kansas City and on what terms. The Royals have their pitcher, but the move becomes real only when the contract is done.
