Dru Brown is set to make his first start for the Blue Bombers since Oct. 27, 2023 on Friday night, when Winnipeg meets the Toronto Argonauts in a Week 6 game at Princess Auto Stadium. The quarterback is stepping in for Zach Collaros, who left Sunday’s 14-13 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with a neck injury on the first play of the second quarter.
That is why the matchup is drawing attention now. The game kicks off at 8:30pm ET, 5:30pm PT, and it carries an odd wrinkle: it will be played in Winnipeg even though it counts as a home game for Toronto, which has been displaced from BMO Field after hosting the World Cup.
Brown said he knows the setting well, and he knows what the moment means. “This is exactly the environment that you want to play in front of. It’s the best environment in the league,” he said Thursday, adding that he is “really excited to play with the group of guys that we have here” and that he wants to “do right by them.”
The last time Brown started for Winnipeg came in a season-finale win over the Calgary Stampeders, and this will be his first chance to do it at home after three years in Winnipeg without ever getting that shot. The Bombers traded for him in late June after he lost his starting job with the Ottawa Redblacks earlier this season, and Mike O’Shea has made clear the team trusts his experience. “With Dru, you’d always be confident in his ability to execute out there because of his experience and his professionalism,” O’Shea said.

O’Shea did not dress Brown against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats because he was not fully versed in the playbook after only one week with the team, saying the best choice then was a quarterback who had been through the whole training camp and knew everything. Taylor Elgersma filled in, going 11-for-15 for 86 yards and a touchdown, but Winnipeg’s offence still managed only 13 first downs and 200 total yards, a reminder that Brown is being asked to learn fast while the job changes around him.
The Bombers are 2-2, and the Argonauts are 2-2, so Friday’s game is not just about one quarterback’s return.
