Brian Windhorst said Friday that he heard LeBron James has a done deal in free agency with a team other than the Cleveland Cavaliers, a claim that adds a sharp new turn to a decision already hanging over the NBA. But Windhorst also said the chatter was too scattered to trust fully, and that he had not heard the Draymond Green rumor from a credible source.
That matters now because James already told the Los Angeles Lakers on June 30 that he intended to play elsewhere next season, setting off a search that has pulled in multiple teams and multiple theories. Rich Paul later put a white board on his Game Over podcast naming 10 teams under consideration, including the Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs.
The Cleveland link remains the most natural one in the story. James spent his first seven NBA seasons in Cleveland before leaving for the Miami Heat for four years, then returned in 2014 and led the Cavaliers to four consecutive NBA Finals and their first NBA championship. He is also from Akron, Ohio, which keeps Cleveland at the center of every conversation about where he might go next.
Still, the picture is not clean. Windhorst said on Cleveland that he was being very, very cautious because the information was too scattered, which is a long way from saying the move is settled. The Draymond Green angle is part of that blur: last week, Shams Charania reported that the Golden State Warriors were planning to pursue James, and the idea of a pairing with Green and Anthony Davis has circulated, but Windhorst said that specific rumor did not come from a credible source.
Golden State remains one of the louder names in the mix, especially if Green stays and joins Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler, who is coming off a torn ACL. Cleveland, meanwhile, would offer James the chance to play alongside Donovan Mitchell, Jarrett Allen and possibly James Harden if he re-signs. The Philadelphia 76ers have also surfaced as an intriguing option after they acquired Jaylen Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics, with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe forming the core around them.
What Windhorst heard points to movement, but not clarity. James has already signaled that he wants out of Los Angeles, and the list around him is wide enough that one source's certainty can still sit beside another's doubt. Until the destination is confirmed, the only safe read is that his next stop is being talked about everywhere and settled nowhere.
