Newcastle have agreed a £51.5m deal with Freiburg for Johan Manzambi, the 20-year-old Switzerland international, but the transfer will not be completed until his country’s run at the World Cup ends. He is expected to sign a long-term contract at St James’ Park once the tournament clears his path.
That price shows why Newcastle moved early: they are paying for a player whose value has been lifted by his performances this summer, while also accepting that the deal is on hold for now. Manzambi is still struggling with a minor knee injury, and Murat Yakin was unsure on Sunday whether he would recover in time for the quarter-final against Argentina.
The timing matters because Newcastle are trying to secure their future business while the tournament keeps one of their targets out of reach. It also sits against a sharper issue on Tyneside, where Bruno Guimarães has become unsettled after the departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon to Tottenham and Barcelona respectively, and Arsenal are hovering.
Newcastle say they have no intention of selling the 28-year-old to Arsenal, and Arsenal have not yet made a formal offer, even though a bid in the region of £75m has been mooted. That leaves Newcastle publicly closing the door on one deal while another expensive move is waiting to be signed off, with Manzambi’s final step depending entirely on how far Switzerland go.
For now, the more immediate question is not whether Newcastle have agreed the fee, but how long they must wait before it becomes a completed transfer. If Switzerland keep advancing, St James’ Park will have to wait too.
