Jacob Tobey is out as the Spurs’ play-by-play announcer after an Instagram Story on his account accused him of cheating with Loren Waters, the sister of Lindy Waters III. The posts spread quickly this week and pushed Tobey’s private life into the center of a public job change.
Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports reported that the shift followed the social media allegations, which included a message that said, “This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not.:)” Another post showed what appeared to be photo booth prints of Tobey and Loren Waters kissing, with the words, “Me and the new girl,” across the image. The posts appeared on Tobey’s account, and fans suggested his girlfriend may have uploaded them because she may have access to it.
That matters because Tobey had only announced in June that he had signed a multi-year extension to stay in the role. He also had become a familiar voice around the Spurs, after previously calling games for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network and even singing the national anthem before Spurs games. The abrupt turn leaves the broadcast booth facing a change tied not to performance on the air, but to a set of accusations now circulating far beyond it.
There is still one part nobody has pinned down: who actually posted the Instagram Story and the follow-up images. What is clear is that Tobey’s social accounts have since been turned to private, and his future with the Spurs has not been publicly defined beyond being out of the job now.
