Jacob Tobey is out as the Spurs’ play-by-play announcer after an Instagram Story on his account alleged that he cheated with Loren Waters, the sister of Spurs guard Lindy Waters III. The posts surfaced earlier this week and quickly put the broadcast booth in the middle of a social-media storm.
Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports reported the change, which makes the timing especially sharp. In June, Tobey had signed a multi-year extension to stay in the role, so the move comes only months after he was publicly tied to the job for the long term.
The account posts were unusually blunt. One message read, “This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not.:)” A second post showed what appeared to be photo booth prints of Tobey and Loren Waters kissing and added, “Me and the new girl.”
Not everyone accepted that Tobey himself wrote them. Fans suggested the posts may have been uploaded by his girlfriend, who may have access to the account, rather than by Tobey directly. That possibility has not been resolved, but the account has since been turned to private, cutting off any immediate public view of what happened next.
The fallout matters because it reaches beyond a personal accusation and into the Spurs’ on-air operation, with a named employee now out of the booth after an alleged relationship involving the family of Lindy Waters III. Tobey had built a public face around the team after working for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network, and he had also sung the national anthem before Spurs games. For now, the unresolved question is not whether the posts spread, but who controlled the account when they did.
