Mads Pedersen and Victor Campenaerts went clear early on Tour de France stage 6, but the move was already under pressure by the time Pedersen led the pair across the intermediate sprint line at Pouzac. The breakaway had one clear job left: stay away long enough to matter.
That mattered because Pedersen’s sprint at Pouzac brought him 25 points for the green jersey, while the bunch kept cutting into the advantage on the 186.2km stage from Pau. At 150km to go, the pair were 1 minute 26 seconds ahead and averaging 50 kilometres per hour, but by 122km to go Campenaerts was down to a 10-second margin and the chase was tightening.
The green jersey battle gave the front of the race its purpose. Pedersen was not just riding for the stage picture; he was collecting points, and the intermediate sprint was the payoff. Behind him, the peloton stayed active too, with Ben Healy attacking as the race passed Pedersen after the sprint and Matteo Jorgenson forcing a move on the fourth-category Côte de Loucroup at 131km to go.
The question hanging over Campenaerts was why he was spending so much energy on the flat. Sean Kelly said he did not understand the effort, and the timing made the point obvious: the pair were still out front, but the road was not giving them much help. Once the bunch started to organize, every kilometre made the breakaway harder to defend.
There was more going on than the chase. Remco Evenepoel stopped for a nature break and slipped 30 seconds behind the bunch after a barrage, while Arvid de Kleijn abandoned from the back of the field. Jens Voigt also flagged a separate flashpoint around Huub Artz, saying the issue was the position of Artz’s hands inside the handlebars, under the brake levers, and that the rider received a verbal warning. In UCI terms, that is the first formal step before the commissaires move further if they judge the conduct unsafe or illegal.
Stage 6 from Pau is still young, but the pattern is set. Pedersen has taken the points, Campenaerts is paying for his work, and the bunch is closing fast enough to make the front of the race feel temporary. Whether the breakaway survives the next stretch is now the stage’s real test.
