The Rockies brought up Gabriel Hughes on Wednesday and cleared a spot by designating John Brebbia for assignment, a move that ended Brebbia’s brief stay on the big league roster. Brebbia later went unclaimed on waivers and elected free agency.
That is the immediate reason Gabriel Hughes is drawing notice now. A roster move that might have looked routine on paper changed Colorado’s active group at once, and it pushed Brebbia out after only a couple of weeks in the majors. He is 36 and was in his ninth season logging MLB time.
Brebbia had signed a minor league deal in late May and then worked his way onto Colorado’s roster. He appeared in three games for the Rockies, allowing five runs on seven hits across 4 1/3 innings while striking out two. Most of the work came with his slider and a fastball that averaged 92 mph, a mix that fit the profile of a veteran trying to hold a bullpen spot by feel and command more than velocity.
For Colorado, the move also fit the math of a roster reset. Bringing up Hughes meant opening a place for a different arm, and Brebbia became the odd man out even though his results were not so poor that he had clearly forced the issue. His season has been split mostly between the Triple-A affiliates of the Twins and Rox, where he threw 29 1/3 innings of 4.30 ERA ball and struck out 29% of the batters he faced.
That is where the story gets interesting. Brebbia cleared waivers and chose free agency, but Colorado could still bring him back on another minor league contract. He has a 4.12 ERA in a little less than 400 MLB innings, which makes him the kind of depth option a club can circle back to if the fit and the timing line up again. For now, though, the clean read is simple: Gabriel Hughes got the call, and Brebbia’s turn on the roster was over.
