The White House announced Tuesday that the first Freedom Fuel gas station had opened in Upper Dublin Township, and drivers in Dresher found regular gasoline posted at $3.47 a gallon. The station opened at a former Sunoco site, and the price was lower than nearby Citgo and Gulf locations listing regular gas at $3.79 and $3.85 a gallon.
For Jessiah Brice, who said the station was convenient because it is near her job, the draw was simple: cheaper gas. She said gas should be cheaper, but also asked how it could be $3.47 there and $5 near her home. That question is now at the center of the launch, because the White House is presenting the stations as a cost break for drivers while a lot remains unclear about how the prices undercut nearby competitors.
A White House spokesperson said a website for the Freedom Fuel Network listed 25 locations across the Philadelphia region and South Jersey, including Elmwood Park, Bustleton and Hunting Park. But the White House did not confirm that all 25 were open, and that leaves the network’s actual footprint murky even as the launch is being promoted as a broader rollout. The White House also said the Freedom Fuel Network is a private company, not a government program, and that the administration has not provided funding for it.
That gap matters because the network is being tied to President Donald Trump even as the business structure behind it is left unexplained. The White House said the $3.47 price was meant to honor the 47th President, but the company behind the Freedom Fuel Network did not respond to a request for comment. For now, the launch gives drivers a new lower-priced option in parts of the Philadelphia area and South Jersey, while leaving the basic mechanics of how the fuel is being sold so cheaply unanswered.
