Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan turned a World Cup preview into a political statement on Monday, using more than four minutes of a news conference to speak about the plight of the Palestinian people before Egypt’s match against defending champion Argentina on Tuesday.
Hassan said the subject was bigger than football. He argued that anyone who did not feel for the Palestinian people was “not human,” then added that he was speaking “through football” and wanted respect for people’s right to live. The remarks landed as Egypt prepared for a match that could send it to the quarterfinals for the first time.
That mattered because Hassan was not talking in the abstract. He had waved a Palestinian flag after Egypt’s victory over Australia in the last round, and FIFA has said it is permitted to display the Palestinian flag at the World Cup. His comments came with the war in Gaza still driving the tournament conversation far beyond the pitch, after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 and Israel’s retaliation has killed 73,066 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
The reaction also underscored how unusual the moment was for Egypt. Hassan had been set up to discuss Argentina and Egypt’s path through the World Cup round of 16, but he used the platform to widen the frame to Gaza and to a people he described as living amid ruins and uncertainty, with more than 2 million Palestinians affected. He also cast Egypt in grand terms, saying the team was no underdog and promising it would do everything to live up to fans’ expectations.
What happens next is clear: Egypt plays Argentina on Tuesday, and a win would take Hassan’s team into the quarterfinals for the first time. For now, the coach who came to Atlanta to talk about a match has made himself part of a much larger one.
