CM Punk is pushing hard for a return on the July 6 episode of RAW in Chicago, even though WWE’s long-term plan is still to move him to SmackDown. The timing matters because he has been largely absent from televised programming for months, and his next appearance could shape how WWE handles one of its biggest names coming out of a long hiatus.
The interest in his return is tied to more than nostalgia. Punk made a brief promo appearance on RAW After WrestleMania, and Cody Rhodes already alluded to a future title fight with him there. Rhodes is also set for a WWE Championship match against Sami Zayn on the July 6 episode of RAW, which makes that show a natural place for WWE to pull Punk back into the conversation if it wants to sharpen the picture around the top of the card.
Dave Meltzer said Punk was pushing very hard for the July 6 return because the show is in Chicago, his hometown, while also making clear that Punk is earmarked for SmackDown. Meltzer added that Punk’s exit from television was meant to set him up for that brand switch and that the eventual destination is a program with Rhodes. In other words, the July 6 RAW would not be the end point. It would be the opening move.
That is where the friction sits. WWE has been exploring Punk and Rhodes as a future feud, but the company also appears to be balancing its rosters, with RAW already carrying Reigns, Rollins, The Usos, Fatu, Femi, Logan Paul and Breakker, while SmackDown is being built around Rhodes, Gunther, Ripley and soon Punk, Orton and McIntyre. The cleanest reading is that WWE wants Punk on television when his angle starts, but wants that angle to live on SmackDown once the switch is complete.
So the answer is not whether Punk matters. He clearly does. The sharper question is whether WWE gives him the Chicago moment he wants on RAW or holds him back for SmackDown, where the company says his next real story is supposed to begin.
