Kevin Guskiewicz is staying at Michigan State University after Clemson University had already moved to install him as its next president, a reversal that leaves both schools in a sudden leadership shuffle. A source close to Michigan State University said Monday that Guskiewicz will remain in East Lansing after previously announcing he would leave for Clemson.
Clemson said on X that its Board of Trustees had been notified that Guskiewicz chose to remain at Michigan State University for personal reasons. That matters because on May 27 the Clemson University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to welcome him as the 16th president, making Monday’s turnabout more than a routine change of plans. His decision keeps Michigan State University from losing its leader after a period in which signs in East Lansing read “We (heart) KG” following his departure announcement.
Guskiewicz had already signaled his intention to leave, then later blamed certain members of the Board of Trustees in a community letter for the departure. The new statement does not spell out those personal reasons, and that is the gap at the center of the story: readers know he is staying, but not what finally persuaded him to reverse course after Clemson’s board had already acted.
The timing also lands alongside another unresolved personnel question at MSU. J Batt was hired by the University of Kentucky on June 15 for the same position, but it is still unclear when his last day at Michigan State University will be. At the time of publication, Batt was listed on the staff directories of both schools, and if Guskiewicz had left, Batt’s buyout would have dropped from $5 million to $2.5 million.
For Michigan State University, the immediate outcome is stability at the top. For Clemson, it is a presidential search that has to reset after a unanimous vote. And for Guskiewicz, the next question is the one he has not answered publicly: what changed between the announcement that he was leaving and the decision to stay.
