For Gallardo, the number is simple. Twelve matches. For the larger Mexican hierarchy, it matters because it places him alongside Javier Hernández, Héctor Moreno and Guillermo Ochoa, behind Andrés Guardado at 13 and Rafael Márquez at 19. Gallardo has been with the national team since Rusia 2018, when he made his World Cup debut, and he has turned that start into a place among the most frequent Mexican presences on the game’s biggest stage.
The milestone comes with an edge that makes it worth more than a line in a record book. Gallardo is a lateral izquierdo for the Selección Mexicana, not the player who usually gets the loudest notice when Mexican World Cup history is discussed. Yet he keeps climbing in the same company as names that have defined generations, even if the spotlight has not always followed him there.
That matters because México was trying to break a round-of-16 drought in the Copa del Mundo, and Gallardo’s latest appearance sits inside that pressure.
