Sheamus is reportedly set to leave WWE when his current contract expires, closing in on free agency after a deal signed in September 2024 that appears to have been a two-year deal. Sean Ross Sapp reported on Fightful Select that WWE approached Sheamus about restructuring while he was sidelined, and he swiftly rejected the offer.
The timing matters because Sheamus has been out since a shoulder injury in November of last year, when he was teaming with John Cena and Rey Mysterio against The Judgment Day. He had surgery the following month, and the expiration of his deal later this year now looks like the next major marker in his return story.
What happens after that is where the picture turns uncertain. It is easy to speculate that Sheamus could make the jump to AEW, especially with Claudio Castagnoli among his close friends there, but that remains speculation rather than confirmation. If his contract runs out normally, WWE would have no reason to impose a 90-day non-compete, which means the former WWE Champion could become available immediately instead of waiting on the sidelines for another three months.
That possibility gives the story its weight. Sheamus is not just another name nearing the end of a contract; he is a former multi-time WWE Champion with a long record at the top, and he and Claudio Castagnoli once worked as The Bar in WWE, where they won Tag Team gold on five different occasions.
