Christian Lundgaard put Arrow McLaren at the front of Sunday’s Mid-Ohio race on a day when the field waited nearly three hours for thunderstorms to clear. He took pole in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet with a fastest lap of 1 minute, 4.8396 seconds and was joined on the front row by teammate Pato O’Ward, giving the team both starting spots for the season’s 11th race.
The result matters now because it resets the order for The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET, and it comes after Lundgaard’s win at Road America two weeks ago. He entered Mid-Ohio seeking his third road course victory of the season and his fourth NTT P1 Award overall, while O’Ward earned a front-row start for the second time this season with a lap of 1:04.8649 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.
Lundgaard’s day also extended a run that has made him one of the most dangerous drivers on road courses this year. He won the Sonsio Grand Prix in May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, finished second in March at Barber Motorsports Park, and last started from No. 1 in Toronto in 2023, when he won from pole. On Sunday, he said the team has momentum after its two wins and that it is time to finish the job.
There was a contrast just behind them. Alex Palou, who arrived with a five-event pole streak and a big points lead, qualified eighth in the No. 10 Open AI Chip Ganassi Racing Honda and saw his run of consecutive NTT P1 Awards end at five. That streak is tied for the fourth longest in series history, matching the mark set by Mario Andretti and Danny Sullivan. Palou still leads David Malukas by 60 points, Kyle Kirkwood by 61 and Lundgaard by 77, with no other driver within 100 points.
For Lundgaard, the pole also landed at a moment when his future remains unsettled even after the Road America win and this latest qualifying statement. He turns 25 on July 23 and said, “I think everybody knows the abilities,” adding, “I don’t need to say anymore than that.” For Arrow McLaren, the message was simpler: the front row is theirs, and Sunday’s race begins with both cars where every team wants to be.
