Woodruff had already battled dead arm symptoms in his April 30 outing against Arizona, and this time the warning signs were visible before he walked off the mound. A trainer visited him after he threw four straight changeups at 73 to 75 mph, then Craig Yoho was rushed in and retired all eight batters he faced in the longest outing of his major league career. That emergency relief kept Milwaukee in the game, but it also underscored how thin the margin has become around the Brewers' rotation when one starter cannot finish the fourth inning.
The start had already turned harsh before Woodruff exited. Adrian Del Castillo hit a first-pitch three-run home run in the opening inning after Gabriel Moreno singled and Corbin Carroll reached base on four uncompetitive misses from Woodruff, and Milwaukee spent much of the afternoon trying to climb back from that hole. Christian Yelich later answered with a 418-foot home run after Brice Turang's leadoff double, while Garrett Mitchell ripped a 421-foot double in the fourth and William Contreras was held at first; Joey Ortiz then lined out at 105.5 mph with the bases loaded and two outs.
The problem for Milwaukee was not just the score. The Brewers were already carrying bullpen strain after covering 25 outs the night before, and they had called up Yoho before the game while placing Joel Kuhnel on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. Even so, the move from Woodruff to Yoho was more than a spot adjustment: it was a reminder that the club is still managing a starter who has not yet fully settled after the dead arm episode that sent him away for two months.
Milwaukee lost 3-2, and the result leaves the next turn of the schedule carrying its own weight. Brewers at Diamondbacks was set for July 5 at 3:05 p.m., with Brandon Sproat listed to start for Milwaukee and Eduardo Rodríguez for Arizona, while Woodruff's condition remained the key unanswered question hanging over the series.
